Why Do I Need My Ducts Cleaned?

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems have been shown to act as a collection source for a variety of contaminants that have the potential to affect health, such as mold, fungi, bacteria, and very small particles of dust. The removal of such contaminants from the HVAC system and home should be considered as one component in an overall plan to improve air quality.

Today, our homes and workplaces are airtight and energy-efficient. This means that they trap pollutants and contaminants inside, which lowers the quality of the air we breathe. The American Lung Association estimates that we spend 90% of our time indoors. Indoor air quality can be 2 to 3 times more polluted than outdoor air, so it is easy to see how your home or workplace could be harmful to your health.

What Are the Benefits of a Clean HVAC System?

The major benefits of a freshly cleaned duct system include:

  1. Cleaner, fresher and healthier air inside your home.
  2. Home furnishings stay cleaner longer.
  3. Mechanical units will perform more efficiently when the coils and blowers are cleaned which means both energy and money savings for you.

Contamination builds over time in your air system. This build-up will reduce the efficiency of your air system. Research by the U.S. EPA has demonstrated that HVAC system cleaning may allow systems to run more efficiently by removing debris from sensitive mechanical components. Clean, efficient systems are less likely to break down, have a longer life span, and generally operate more effectively that dirty systems.

How Will the Ducts be Cleaned?

Air duct cleaning is a misnomer. In actuality, the entire HVAC system is cleaned. The air handler unit will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. The cooling coils will be cleaned with coil cleaner. The entire supply and return duct system will be cleaned and deodorized.

The most effective way to clean air ducts and ventilation systems is a thorough decontamination. There are two key components to HVAC cleaning: breaking contaminants loose, and the collection of contaminants. Source removal begins with the use of two agitation devices which include a power brush system and a forward/reverse air whisk system. Air whipping and the use of compressed air agitates and lifts dust and other debris which are then drawn into the HEPA filtered vacuum units.

During cleaning, the entire HVAC system is placed under continuous negative pressure (vacuum) to prevent the spread of contaminants. Continuous negative pressure allows very fine particles to be removed from the system as they become airborne, ensuring that these particles are not released into the living space when the system is turned on after cleaning. Once the contaminants are removed, the entire duct system is deodorized with Ultra Odor Kill and sealed with Soot Seal. Systems with mold, mildew and fungus can also be treated with EnviroCON.

All of our vacuum equipment is HEPA-filtered to 99.97% so the dirt stays in the machine and out of your home. Our procedures are designed to protect your home and furnishings from dust/dirt and we always leave the home cleaner than when we arrived.
